The Exhibition on Colonial Periodical Press: Historical Sources and References is open until the 21st of October 2022, at the Biblioteca da Faculdade de Letras of the Universidade de Lisboa’s gallery. Inaugurated on the first day of the 2° IGSCPP Congress, “The Liberalism and the Colonial Press”, the exhibition includes documents from private archives and libraries, as well as from the FLUL library’s collection, crossing one century of the periodical press published in the colonies of the Portuguese Empire, from Liberalism to the rise of the anti-colonial struggles.

Thank you!

The 2º IGSCPC-PE Congress has been held in Lisbon on the 21st and 22nd of September, at the Faculdade de Letras of the Universidade de Lisboa and the Colégio Almada Negreiros of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

On the first day, besides the exciting and intense debates provoked by the many papers sessions, an exhibition on the colonial periodical press was opened at the Biblioteca da Faculdade de Letras’ gallery, showing historical sources and references both from private archives and the library’s catalogue. The exhibition happened thanks to Dr Pedro Estácio’s precious help, who collaborated with us in the installation of the display. In addition, we launched some online exhibitions, that are still available on our website: the Common Virtual Exhibition, the Instituto do Arquivo Histórico Nacional de Cabo Verde’s Exhibition and the Arquivo Histórico de Moçambique’s Exhibition.

On the second day, papers sessions brought very inspiring debates, interspersed by joyful moments of social gathering and two books launch: Creating and Opposing Empires: the Role of the Periodical Press, a book recently published by Routledge, that counts as the first IGSCPC congress proceedings (2017); A Abelha da China nos seus 200 anos, edited by the Centro Científico e Cultural de Macau, celebrating the bicentenary of the journal and the rise of the periodical press in that land. The day was concluded by a dynamic round table that saw the participation of guest speakers from all over the world. Once again, we thank the guest speakers for accepting our invitation to debate such challenging topics.

Our deepest gratitude is for all of you who stay with us for the two days, both on site and from home: all the speakers, the audience, the Scientific Committee members, our institutional partners, and all the people involved in the organization of this event during the last six months. We hope to see you all soon! Until then we invite you to download and read our summary book (now updated!) on the proper page. Thank you!

On the 21st of September, the conference will be held at the Library’s building, room B112.B, in the complex of the Faculdade de Letras (Universidade de Lisboa, Campo Grande). At the Library entrance, please ask the desk for the library’s rooms.
